WASH ‘N FIND 2015
9:30 am – 7:00 pm Saturday June 6 and Sunday June 7
At select Pet Food Express stores throughout Northern and Southern California
It’s two in the morning. Your phone rings. Would you get out of your comfortable bed, dress, load your dog into your car, drive for miles into the wilderness and spend the next 10 hours hiking through mud, brush and dense forest looking for someone you’ve never met? That’s what the more than 300 volunteers of CARDA – California Rescue Dog Association – and their highly trained canine partners are doing every day of the year, 24/7, throughout the state of California.
Now community members and their dogs have a chance to meet and support these extraordinary volunteers and their hard-working canine partners in their life-saving work.
We need your help!
On June 6th and 7th, 17 select Pet Food Express stores in Northern and Southern California will be hosting CARDA Search and Rescue dogs in a unique fund-raiser – WASH ‘N FIND - that benefits not only these very special dog heroes but the family pup as well. From 9:30 am to 7:00 pm both days, all the proceeds from pet wash tokens sold at participating stores will be donated to CARDA.
Pet wash tokens cost $15 and activate the convenient self-serve wash stations for 25 minutes. Pet Food Express provide everything needed to get Fido clean and presentable - a back-saving raised tub, shampoo, towels, air dryer, apron, after-bath tub clean-up - and are easier than trying to wash dogs at home. Pet wash tokens can be used any Pet Food Express store with a self-serve pet wash and do not have to be used on the day of the event. There’s even a “buy 3- get the 4th one free” option.
“Buy tokens as gifts, buy tokens for the year, buy for the future. This is the perfect time to stock up” suggests CARDA President Carol Shapiro. “Dogs will get dirty all year long just like we and our dogs will be out there saving lives all year long!”
This is the third time Pet Food Express has teamed with CARDA. Says Pet Food Express Director of Community Outreach, Mike Murray, “Pet Food Express prides itself on the quality of its products, its customer service and giving back to the pet community. We also take a great deal of pride in being associated with a group such as CARDA. The incredible work done by the dedicated handlers and their canines is something we admire, respect and support.”
CARDA members and their dogs will be available at all 17 stores throughout both days to greet the public, giving families the chance to talk with the handlers and meet the Search and Rescue dogs “up close and personal”. From Rat Terriers to Mastiffs, there have been dogs of more than 50 breeds who have achieved Mission-Ready status and at the present time, CARDA has dogs of 34 recognized breeds in their program as well as 31 mixed breed dogs, some of whom are shelter rescues.
At any given time, CARDA, the oldest and largest all-volunteer Not-For-Profit canine Search and Rescue organization in the nation has more than 150 certified dog and handler teams ready to deploy in search of the lost and missing. Providing services to local law enforcement, community service organizations, the National Forest Service and FEMA, CARDA members deploy on almost 400 searches annually and all of this at no cost to the public!
Since its inception in 1976, CARDA K-9 search teams have participated in thousands of searches and saved the taxpayers of California millions of dollars through the use of this unique voluntary community resource. CARDA members personally absorb nearly every cost associated with their work: the dog, dog food, routine and emergency veterinary care, equipment, gas, vehicle maintenance, outside training, and time lost from work.
With an all-volunteer staff, every dollar raised goes directly to helping the organization continue its life-saving work. The organization is planning to use the monies raised to cover emergency medical bills for dogs injured in the line of duty. With the amount of time and training it takes to bring a dog and handler to Mission-Ready status, each certified team is an extremely valuable resource. Ensuring every dog has access to the best and most comprehensive medical treatment available helps assure dogs remain healthy, active and available to work when the call comes in. Funds will also be dispersed to help partially cover handler search deployment expenses.
